Description

The Toronto Gay Hockey Association (TGHA) is a non-contact, social, ice hockey league for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT), and heterosexual men and women over the age of eighteen. The league is a not for profit organization run by volunteers. Nine teams comprised of players from various backgrounds and skill levels play every Sunday evening at the Canlan Ice Sports - York complex, located on the grounds of York University. The regular season begins in late September and ends with playoffs in the Spring. Spectators are always welcome.

The TGHA offers an environment free from all forms of harassment and discrimination and encourages fair play, openness and friendship. We provide a competitive and social atmosphere that promotes the growth of leadership, coaching, and playing skills.

Founded in 1994, the TGHA began as a group of like minded people who got together to play hockey in a friendly environment free from the aggressive atmosphere of some main stream leagues. Eventually, that initial group grew into the full, multi-team, organized league we have today.

One of the aspects of the TGHA is the inclusion and encouragement of players, men and women, of all skill levels and ages over eighteen. The league has players ranging in age from the early 20's to mid 50's. New players joining the league must attend an evaluation session to determine their skill level. After the evaluation session they are included in the general draft, which is used to assemble the teams. The combination of player evaluations and the draft system were established to ensure balanced teams. This system also encourages friendship in a social atmosphere because team members change every year.

The TGHA is truly a fun league offering friendship and camaraderie through sport. We organize league events throughout the season and we also host the annual Friendship Tournament. We also coordinate out of town tournaments with other cities. Whether you are a novice or an old pro we invite everyone interested in playing this great game to come join us for the fun, on and off the ice.
