Be a Parade Superstar!!

My favourite day of the 2010 Summer last year was without a doubt Sunday, July 4th - the day of the Pride Parade.

I had been to a couple of parades as a spectator, and always had a good time, but it was just one of several fun things to do in the city during the summer.  This year was different.  As apart of the newly formed Toronto Gay Football League, we pulled together a small group of people to march in the parade and bring awareness to the league.

I really did not know what to expect, but it didn't take long to hit me - this was going to be a blast! The best way to describe it is that everyone who marches in the parade is treated by the crowd as a local superstar.  The enthusiasm that emanates from the crowd - demonstrated by yelling, screaming and calling for your attention - really creates an incredibly positive atmosphere that is nothing short of surreal.

Our little group marched along throwing a football into the crowd (and they returned it back to us), stopping to run little "mock plays" on the street, even playing an impromptu game of catch with several policemen on duty.  The crowd could not get enough of us!!!

The adrenaline rush of marching in the parade only allowed me to appreciate the parade for what it was on the surface, and that alone was enough to make for a great day.  However, later that day when the rush was gone, I could really appreciate the experience on a different level - making a difference.  If you are reading this post, you already have an understanding of the positive influence of the pride parade, and knowing that I was able to contribute was certainly very fulfilling.

So, these are just a couple of reason why I enjoyed my experience so much, and will now march every chance I get.  For you, the reasons may be different, but for everyone, marching in the parade is sure to be an unforgettable experience.  I encourage all of you to reach out to your respective organization and get involved - you won't regret it!!
