LGBT Involvement in the 2012 Ontario Summer Games in Toronto

The City of Toronto will host the 2012 Ontario Summer Games from August 16 to 19, 2012. The 2012 Games will bring together approximately 2,500 athletes competing in twenty-eight sports in multiple venues across Toronto and surrounding regions. The Games are geared to young athletes aged eleven to twenty-two and present a unique opportunity for them to assess their potential for engaging in national and international competitions.

I think the LGBT sports community should consider the benefits of our involvement in this major event. The development of LGBT leagues is a testament to our interest in sport, an interest that was often stymied in our youth due to homophobia in the locker room. As we gain acceptance in the greater community, we need to break out of our silos and welcome opportunities to engage other leagues in friendly competition. I would encourage OutSport Toronto’s members as well as those leagues that have not yet opted to join us to put together entries to the qualifying rounds that will be offered to Ontario athletes leading up to next year’s competitions here in Toronto. Check out the sports on the roster of the Ontario Summer Games Toronto 2012 web site:  https://ontariosummergames.ca/sports.html.

I would also encourage the LGBT community to get the word out that this event will require over 1,000 volunteers to help make the Ontario Summer Games a success. The volunteer registration link is:  https://ontariosummergames.ca/volunteers/registration/index.html. By volunteering, those of us involved in the LGBT sports community have an opportunity to show our interest in and support of the greater Ontario sports community that will gather in our city next summer.

Get out and play!
